That's the truly stupidest comment I've ever heard ( seen ) posted on
Usenet.
It seems to be popular with US rednecks.
The simple truth is that - when the *** hits the fan - governments of
both major political persuasions , Conservative and Labour - find the BBC
to be a thorn in their side !
Now explain how it's possible to be both left AND right wing ?
The BBC was ( quite unreasonably in my view ) given hell over the fact it
allowed very critical debate about the Iraq war for example that led to
several ppl ultimately quitting their postions in the BBC although IMHO
the BBC should have stood firm for telling the truth !
I don't think you'll find that Alastair Campbell, the Labour Party's ( and
goverenment's by default ) chief spin doctor was very fond of the BBC ! I
shall never forget how he idiotically 'invited himself' onto Channel 4's
news programme to lambast the BBC in what was quite clearly a fit of
pique.

He *RESIGNED*. The government *CANNOT* sack him.
That story is a whole affair in itself. The government comes out of it
badly despite appoimnting a 'judge' who produced what was largely seen as
a 'whitewash' report over the incident that no-one believed.
