Thanks Jim,
Yes, I do a little aspirin every morning. Likewise, cardiovascular
workout and weight training. And if pushups turn out to aid longevity I
might live to be a hundred. I'm on track to do 37,440 one-armed pushups
this year. Last year I did 104,000 two-armed pushups and just over
80,000 the year before that. I've been a vegetarian since I was 21 and
in the Coast Guard (the ship's cook was a wino on top of which I
suffered from sea sickness - I barfed his raw pot-roast at chow one day
- I'm 48 now and haven't eaten meat since). Last check my total
chlorestoral was 107. Pulled a pectoral muscle at the gym two years ago
- wondered if it was angina. So had a stress test and the doc
complained I was using up all his chart paper to get my heart rate up
to required rate. He pulled another doc and nurse out of the hallway in
order to show off his wunder patient. I went away feeling pretty good.
Still, there's some evidence that infections can produce clots and drop
even the lean-mean-running machines in their tracks. There's only so
much you can do. Life is a risk. As Seneca observed, "The hour that
gives us life begins to take it away."
Btw, I have a nephew, ex-Mr. New Hampshire bodybuilder. He worked at a
gym as a trainer along with his best friend and training partner.Well,
Angelo was at the desk one day and someone rushed in tell him that
someone had collapsed on the treadmill. Turns out, it was his 24 year
old friend who died on the spot from a massive heart attack. Angelo
(now in his first year of residency in Calif.) recounts that his friend
looked like Michelangelo's David and fooled the doctors. Turns out, his
friend's arteries were choked with plaque. Poor kid. he thought he was
doing everything right.
Best,
Mike
