You can get cheap IR detectors, like the ones in bathrooms, from various
electronics suppliers. The Sharp GP2D120 gives you 30cm, whereas the
GP2D12 gives you about 80cm. These are VERY directional, but cheaper than
the ultrasonic sensors mentioned elsewhere. The output is an analog
voltage which is related to the distance of the obstruction.
