I got a free old computer off someone and stuck Linux Slackware, as recommended by Rich Grise, on it. Slackware came with the Apache webserver and it was sort of all set up. (Fingers crossed)
I registered some domain names and got some DNS servers and have just told them to redirect themselves somewhere.
Presto. Now the world has access to my website in the attic.
You don't have to be hard enough to try it. Just have a go.
Good idea for experimenting, leaning Apache etc. But not practical for a commercial site having anything but the lightest of traffic, or where you need it to run 24/7 with reasonable uptime. When you go on holiday, to work etc.
You also need to consider electricity costs. I think it will work out more expensive than a cheap hosting plan.
I would only do it on a DMZ, in which case you should dedicate a machine to the task. Even 100 W (really old PC) is 2.4 kWhr/day. What is a unit, perhaps 15p (UK) ?
2.4*15=36p/day.
30 * 24=1080p/month, which is £10.80/month. (about $15/month in US terms). You can get hosting for a lot less than that. Sure, with virtual hosts you can do many web sites on your $15/month, but then the bandwidth is a limit.

Please note my email address changes periodically to avoid spam. It is always of the form: month-year@domain. Hitting reply will work for a couple of months only. Later set it manually. The month is always written in 3 letters (e.g. Jan, not January etc) .
