And I'd like some perspective from the people who know how to avoid the

I would think the internet and some prisons are the only places in the
world where the primary activity is mutual abuse, as though that were
the goal.

So, strategies for not feeding the trolls? How does one avoid
attracting attention from the feeble minded majority?

It seems like the only solution is to join private newsgroups, if at
all... as the world is rife with assholes, most of them being americans
or brits, obviously.

You are not required to read and respond to every bit of fluff
commentary any old joe blow idiot chooses to post to your thread. It is
understood that USENET is loaded with sociopathic individuals of
congenitally diminished mental capacity, posers, psychopaths, delusional
schizoids, wannabes, psychopathic narcissists (you know who you are:-),
egomaniacs (you know who you are:-),and innumerable other categories of
discard along the same vein ( you know who you are:-). Most of these
people are affectionately known as "characters." The keywords are
unmoderated *public* forum, so get over it or go find a seriously and
responsibly *moderated* NG.

I prefer the term "eccentric" ;-)

Though I do recall dressing up in a tux one time and my daughters aged
9 and 6 at the time allowed as how Dad looked "extinguished" ;-)
