It's not too difficult to derive what the interests are, and what the
expertise is in.

What I needed to know was to use a filter in a newsreader which I'll
have to download, and not use google groups, then the conversation will
take place among people who don't have such dire need for a better view
of themselves.


Don't worry about that. Here's a much better advice:

Do a search on posts to s.e.d. with Guy Macon as a filter and find the URL
of the group he's running. It's a nice design group where he invits nice
peoples and do a nice to moderate the assholes.
I think you won't be annoyed there and you'll have good advices there.
