Hello Paul,

So don't ask for a "green card", rather ask *every* new and
prospective employee for proof of citizenship, permanent residency,
or other authorization to work in the US.

Which proves nothing if those IDs are bogus. Fake ID is easily available
and difficult to detect, if you're not in the law enforcement business.
Do you want to be held legally responsible for not recognizing a bogus
drivers license? Or a legitimate one, issued to someone with a fake
birth certificate?

Why is this so difficult? When we got re-roofing bids I checked the
licenses of all three bidding contractors online. That took me about 10
seconds per contractor. In employment cases the thing to do would be to
verify the social security number that was given against the name and
address that was also given. All that information must be made available
anyway to an employer. If the address doesn't jibe as it can often
happen when people move a lot it should be no big deal to ask for the
one that matches the SS number. If an employee doesn't know it that
should raise a big red flag.

First of all, do you think its a good idea to put SS data online for any
purpose? We all will be put at risk of identity theft (or whatever) so
that the Minutemen can sleep easier at night? No thanks.

Also, if people can buy a stolen SSN now, they can just as easily buy
one with a valid address.

Once, while I was doing temp jobs, there was one that they called "file
conversion". I jumped at it, thinking, "Oh, hell, I can write a program to
convert one file format to another in my sleep!" Wrong. It was paper
files, from one bank that had just been bought by another bank, and they
had different systems for organizing their vanilla folders: one went
alphabetically by name, and the other was by SSN. So, they had about three
or four thousand file folders from the old bank, sorted alphabetically,
and three or four thousand brand new file folders pre-printed with the
customer's SSN. The job consisted in taking one of the alphabetic folders,
look through it until you spot the customer's SSN, go pick that
pre-printed folder, and give it to the other temp who was sitting down,
stacking and sorting them.

The point is, I saw more than a dozen folders of customers who were dead.
I seriously considered copying down a couple of those SSNs, in case I ever
had to go underground or anything. [1]

So I can see how easy it'd be to gin up a phony SSN.

Thanks!
Rich
[1] didn't actually follow through, I still have my original SSN:
473-60-3333. I don't care if anybody steals my identity, because my net
personal worth is pretty much negative. )-; [2]
[2] I have a six-figure income, if you count the dollar sign, decimal
point, and cents.
