According to the TV news report, Philips is developing chips to disable
your remote control during commercials for TV sets and TIVO.

I don't understand how Philips can patent a tecnology already existing:
VPS/PDC has been out at least for ten years now. Are they patenting the
wire that goes from the teletext decoder to the remote receiver?

However, I think that they will achieve the opposite result to that they
want: if they contribute to spread the VPS/PDC technology (which isn't
active in most countries), actually there will be a lot more devices that
will use it to *disable* the commercials in some way, rather than enforce
them.
