Over here some elderly Pakistani ( Mainly ) grandparents who came to live
with their families never bothered to learn English and now our social
services have to speak *their* language to be able to deal with them ! And
gov't leaflets are made available in other languages too.


That is wrong. When immigrating to a country it can be expected that the immigrant learns the prevalent language in due course. I was a foreigner in several places so I believe I can make that statement (and I did learn the local language). I have never understood what can be so difficult for a Spanish speaking person to learn English. Folks from China or Korea are certainly facing a steeper learning curve yet they usually master it.

Isn't the national dish of the UK these days "Chicken Tikamasala"?
