Hello Frank,
That is, sadly, true. I think it's because it's a particularly unlucky
combination of two low-performance, ressource hungry (some would say:
braindead) things: Java and XML.
Often it's: modern != efficient.
How would you know?

From sad experience. Almost every time I had to upgrade or had the
"pleasure" to use newer versions of SW at clients things became slower,
more complicated, less reliable. The more scary adventures I was able to
avoid but friends who absolutely had to have the latest and "greatest"
didn't: Imagine the thrill roaring down a freeway in the middle of the
night and suddenly all lights on the dash come on and the car stops for
good. Now where is that secret reset button?

On the other side of that, I remember when we had to check the
pedigree of computer components very carefully. Now any old
cheap-as-dirt peripheral seems to work just fine, as does the software
it's bundled with. I attribute that to a division of labo[u]r between
those who come up with the VLSI chips, reference designs and reference
software and those who can throw stuff together at almost no cost.
Best regards,
