I think you're wrong about "no lifetime warranty on that cheap meter". OP says
the logo is Craftsman.
The last time I looked, "Craftsman" was synonymous with "if it fails, Sears will
repair or replace it."
Only on hand tools. Power tools have no such warranty.
And even then, sometimes they balk/baulk at some of the more egregious
attempts to exchange damaged tools:
