The UK is desperately trying to strangle itself by employing as many
people as possible to control as many people as possible.

I need to upgrade my domestic electrical supply to 100A but...

Controller "We cannot upgrade your 60A fuse to 100A unless the tails
are 25mm."
"But I am not allowed to do that."
Controller "Exactly, you need a qualified part-P electrician."
"But he can't wire up the extra load until the 100A fuse is fitted."
(sung to the tune "there's a hole in my bucket")
Controller "I'll send you out a load investigation form. You fill it in
and send it back."

I predict that the load investigation will report "The customer does
not have 25mm tails in place therefore he cannot have the 100A
upgrade." and then I will dial:

08701 963 090 and press "1" for "upgrade domestic supply" and the
reply will be

"you need to dial" 0845 234 0040 negotiate another menu or two, enjoy
several minutes of the second movement of BWV 1068 in D major before
a human being will tell me that "to upgrade domestic supply you need
to dial

08701 963 090 and then I will "hold for general enquiries" while they
play "There's a hole in my bucket." and then the Controller will say,
"We cannot upgrade your 60A fuse to 100A unless the tails are 25mm..."

Get in an "Appropriate Person" to upgrade the tails to your existing
consumer unit, but remember to leave plenty of slack for later
modifications.

What are "tails"? The incoming power leads to the house maybe?

The UK regulations are so ridiculous these days. Even though I am a
Chartered Engineer with over 30 years experience in electrical
machinery, I cannot legally change a wall socket in my own house as I
don't have a portfolio of inspected installations and am not willing to
pay the requisite 400UKP to get one.

Here, in a big over-regulated US city, new construction and major
repairs involve permits and inspections. After that, a lot of people
just make interior mods themselves, or have an electrician or
"handyman" do it, without benefit of legal oversight. Not *me* of
course! What's practice over there?

I know one guy who put up plywood and painted it to look like the
existing peaked roof, added an entire floor to his house, then removed
the art when all the construction was over.

We can buy anything we need at a hardware store or Home Depot, so it's
no secret that there's a lot of do-it-yourself going on. The stuff is
incredibly cheap... you can get a switch or a duplex outlet (dual wall
socket) for about 75 cents. Our wiring's not as safe as yours, but it
sure is cheap and easy.
