Actually the European countries want to archive all electronic traffic
for up to seven years - just in case - and are passing laws to that
effect. One wonders what the point was in removing the Berlin wall
when all we will achieve is to move it more to the west.

I believe they "only" want to store sender and receiver information not
the actual
content. But thats scary enough.

I've heard, maybe it is just a myth, that the european phone companies
for a
long time did not keep phone records of who was talking to whom,
because of
they feared (or maybe knew from experience?) that if a country was
invaded by the russians the first thing they would do was to go get the
phone records, so that when
they found someone they didn't like, they knew who they were normally
in contact
with and could go pick them up as well.....
