I should add that gaining a foot hold into one household, and hacking
the wireless access point (WAP), can be the gateway for attacking the
entire area around that household (other homes, businesses, and
apartments). As that WAP can then directly attack other WAPs and their
client machines, with an ever expanding coverage map. In theory, over
time, a single hacker could take over much of a major city just hacking
WAPs.

Though I've had a hand in designing a WiFi repeater, I don't believe
in wireless, except for phones ;-)

I read the HIPAA documents a few times. I don't believe in
wireless phones, headphones, keyboards, mice, cameras,
intercoms, pretty much wireless anything, unless you are happy
to accept drive-by pilfering and expect all your data is being
sent in the clear to anyone who wants to be listening. There
was a few episodes of "Someone's Watching" on one of the cable
science channels showing how trivial this is to do.

Are there any (excepting cell phones and sort of 802.11)
wireless devices that encrypt the traffic?

Nothing wireless here, never will be, and I THINK I can honestly
say due diligence has been done in protecting confidentiality.
