'Neoconservative' appears to be your term. What's the difference between
a neoconservative and a palaeoconservative (apart from age, of course)?

The difference is that the "neocons" are not really conservatives.
Conservatives are for a balanced budget and limiting the power of
government. Neocons have increased the deficit and expanded the power of
the federal government.

There are some "cult of personality" aspects to their beliefs. Their
models are Reagan and Nixon. Many of them were in those administrations.
Today we hear echos of Nixons "if the president does it, it is not
illegal"

I wish that US actions in the role of police chief were a bit more
intelligent,

The US has a long history of getting the exact inverse of its desired
results when it acts internationally. I think this is because americans
have never understood the "blow back" problem.
ie:
If the US wanted the current president of Iran out of office, the best
way to do so would be announce their full support for him. The others
around him would have him out of office before the end of the day.
