That's not entirely true. Plenty of former 'East' Germans find life in
the 'west' tougher.

Those are the ones that had political preferment through corruption of
one form or another. Now they don't have that, of course they're
whining.

I'm not entirely convinced it's just those who had preferential treatment
that
are complaining. The GDR was able to find jobs for everyone and no-one was
totally destitute. Those whose skills aren't the greatest are finding it
tough
now in comparison.

Socialism was quite always popular in Europe overall and still is.

There's socialism and there's the oligarchic tyranny of the DDR. If YOU
can't tell the difference, are you surprised that Americans don't like
the concept of socialism at all.

Of course I know the difference but the Americans would be mistaken to
think
that the GDR was always unpopular with its ppl. For a long time it was
considered the model example of its type.

Additionally of course, notably in france and Italy, ther's been quite a
bit of
support for the local Communists.

Even if they looked at UK's benign version of socialism, until the Blair
governments there was nothing to recommend it. Some would say there
still isn't.

I doubt anyone here would like to see the NHS go in favour of a US type
system
though.

There are plenty of wealthy people who sneer at the NHS, and refuse to use
it - then complain that they have to pay national insurance as well as
choosing to pay private health insurance!

There are also countless doctors who would love to see the collapse of the
NHS so they can charge fees from every patient!
