The USA certainly has a south. In New Orleans, the temperature (in F)
and the humidity commonly sum to about 190, pretty much
indistinguishable from people flinging buckets of hot water on you all
day. It's pleasant to walk in the rain (it rains every afternoon) but
it really doesn't cool you off. The mosquitoes are as big as chickens
and the roaches are as big as kittens.
You were lucky! The mosquitos in Alaska were the size of a Huey
helicopter, and used to hide in plain sight on the airfield. One of the
guys in my barracks drove the fuel truck. He claimed that he pumped
over 200 gallons of fuel into a mosquito one dark night before he
realized his mistake.
I once heard you could tense your arm and pump enough blood into a
mosquito until she burst. Eagerly, I tried it. Mosquito lands, hooks
in, and I start pumping.
It worked great--sort of.
She plumped up instantly, jerked out, jumped free and fell like a
stone. Just before impact she recovered and flew off low, fully
loaded, her altitude resembling a sawtooth, and barely clearing the
grass tips with each wing beat.
I never did that again.
Cheers,
James Arthur
