Coincidentally I had to go to a memorial service today. A young lad had committed suicide. Very sad story. Man, that was tough.

I don't understand it either, and maybe I never will. All we can do now is pray and be there for the families.

There's a problem with that. Empathy is a personal feeling. When you try and express it things become awkward. It gets worse when you try to apply rules to its expression.


Yes, you can't express it to the people involved. But where you can help them a lot is to have a listening ear for whatever they would like to unload or talk about. That's why I and my wife did schooling a while ago to become lay caregivers. Most of the time we are listeners when doing this kind of ministry. That took a lot of learning for me because engineering types think in a result-oriented "let's solve the problem" mode most of the time.
