According to Wikipedia, something like political (in?)correctness. The
guy making the maps up didn't want to associate the Democrats with
commie red. Apparently only a decade or so old.
The colors reversed (and thus more logical) in the UK and Canada- Red
has long been the color of the Liberal party (Labour in the UK) and
the Conservatives are associated with blue (closer to a cyan than the
ricy blue of the Canadian Tories).
