It's one of these "base" human responses, like losing your temper, fearing or hating the unknown, hitting out without thinking, or hamstering food during a shortage. It's part of the human nature, but a part that most civilised people try to suppress.

I don't know that it's fair to call it "typical US", however. People all over the world do such petty and childish things sometimes.
