The real killer would be if Iran actually asks Euros for the oil, and the
Chinese start investing in the old world rather then in Columbustistan.
:-)
China is already (and has been) dis-investing in the US and moving the
investment money to South America, Africa and Southeast Asia. They are not
talking about it, they are just doing it (following the lead of several
multinational corporations).
What they're really up to is not so much classic financial investment
but more locking up access to natural resources.

They have to do something with all the dollars they make.
So they bought US bonds.
If the return on those bonds gets lower (interests rates), then say on
European ones, capital will move towards Europe.
The European bank is increasing interest rates, the US lowering.
Because the US has this huge deficit, they are printing dollars like mad.
If those dollars are no longer covered by bonds (Nixon disconnected the dollar
from the gold, so it is only covered by paper) you get what is called inflation
(other word for the dollar is not even worth the ink).
This may lead to funny things, I once did read that in Italy, before it joined
the euro, the lire became so cheap that one manufacturer started pressing coins
to used these for the backside of watches, it was cheaper then buying the metal.
If other countries no longer buy the bonds, then you get a spiral, until the
dollar is worth the same as those lires.
It is my view that the US, with mostly weapon sales and MS windows as export
product atm. will start a WW3 in that case, as it still has submarines and nukes.
However others are also working on weapons, so keeping the war away from N America
will become more and more difficult.
The US could either fall apart, with states with more resources going
in a different direction, or in the best case be bought and become part of
China, or maybe a Saudi Arabian province.
Well, I dunno, it does not matter much, perhaps if the US invented an even stronger
weapon then the H bomb it would be able to keep at the top, by fear.
History shows that all big civilizations collapsed.
Add a bit of global warming, pieces of land flooding, a thousand years from
now the world could be a very different place.
Maybe humanity would go extinct, and the insects inherit the earth, until the
sun goes out.
What our function in the universe is.. and how long.... we are in a way just
a piece of the mechanism of that universe.
A flash in time.
Gosh, you should give up engineering and write fiction.
John
There are several answers possible, one being: What makes you think I did not ;-)?
OTOH we think we are so important.
It is a big religious like thinking the earth is in the middle and the sun orbits
around it...
Then we think we are the only 'life' in the universe....
Then we think we, the society we live in, is the only correct one,
We think our religion is the only valid one etc.
I truely think we have no free will, we are but a piece of the mechanism
of the universe.
If you _really_ think you have free will, look here;
ftp://panteltje.com/pub/freewill.gif
Imagine that computer that runs a program, write a second thread, called 'self awareness',
one that monitors the system monitor, add a variable 'importance', it may
find itself very important, because it does so many things.
Now there is us.
In a way the things [we] are important, and unique too, but no more so then the force the grain
of sand has on the other grains that it supports and that support it to hold the universe
together.
All the Bushes, statesmen, generals, and soldiers, probably exist on may other planets in
some for or other too..
All very important to them.
Same for the states, the US, Europe, China, it is a changing landscape.
In cosmological timescales earth not so long ago was glowing hot perhaps.
And when the sun goes out it will become bigger and bigger they say, and engulf the earth and
fry your pizza free of charge.
Do you _really_ think text like this will sell ;-)?
LOL
