Are any of the alternate PDF file generators any good? I just can't

Anybody using this one?

If you want pdfs from a word processor, use OpenOffice. That way
(assuming you structured your document properly), you get nice clickable
table of contents and references (I gather it is theoretically feasbile
using MS Word and Adobe's tools, but vastly more effort - with ooo it's
just a click on a toolbar button).
If you want general pdf creation (a virtual printer), try pdfCreator
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/). These sorts of generators
are all just wrappers around postscript - pdfCreator is quite a good one,
and open source. Any of the other free or cheapo programs work in much
the same way.
If you want to generate really nice pdf documents, use pdfLaTeX
(www.miktex.org).
