If you consider "buying" makes territorial acquisition "legitimate",
then there are also the parts purchased from France (most of the land
between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains), Spain (Florida
and parts of other states) and Mexico (southern part of Arizona and
New Mexico. Also, Texas and Vermont joined the union voluntarily
after a short time as independent republics - their "legitiamacy" was
not a function of the US government.
