You do it with an AC voltage if you use capacitors and diodes but not DC.

Charge two or more capacitors in parallel and then discharge them,
in series, into another capacitor. Do it fast enough to compensate
for losses and the load, and the voltage across the output cap will
rise to nearly n Ein, where n is the number of caps dumping into the
reservoir.

Compound charge pump, dopey donkey, No AC involved.
