Just observation. Nearly all the basic labor stuff I see here -
construction, painting, gardening, things like that - is being done by
immigrants. That drives down wages in those sectors and trashes
entry-level jobs for a lot of non-academic kids. Without immigrant
laborers, demand for labor would be extreme and wages would be much
higher. Both the immigrants and the laborers they displace are "poor",
especially since many of the immigrants are paid off the books.
After Katrina, the black residents of New Orleans were complaining
that reconstruction jobs were mostly going to imported Mexican
laborers.
