You seem to forget that "the media" are ignorant

You regard them too highly. Mind numbingly stupid is closer to the truth,
or, as Willard Scott once quipped, "A TV anchor: A $10 wig on a $5 brain".

I was thinking not only of TV, but the press as well, who rarely have
a degree qualified scientist available to help sort the wheat from the
chaff
There are still some gems out there, in TV land
http://media.guardian.co.uk/broadcast/comment/0,,2050544,00.html
but many so called science programs can barely be called a
threefactumentary

The press all think they are Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. What they fail
to realise is that Woodward and Bernstein aren't Woodward and Bernstein -
i.e. they never managed to get close to that one time performance. Science
is far beyond their ability to comprehend - they can barely deal with a
monkey's tea party at the local zoo.
