I got DSL instead of FiOS because that lets me keep my copper connection, i.e. when my power goes out, my phone service runs on the central office batteries, not some poorly-maintained NiMH battery pack in my basement. It's also cheaper, involves no installation, and does what I need.

Interesting, I didn't know Verizon could do copper. I thought it was mostly a cell phone and fiber company. My experience with DSL is that while POTS keep going during a longer power outage the DSL vanishes pretty much right away. Sometimes their dial-up numbers still work, sometimes not. So I don't bother to use a UPS on the DSL modem.

Central office power for POTS is what I want to keep--it's important for safety reasons. Verizon is the successor to Nynex, which is the successor to New York Telephone (Ma Bell), so they own all the old copper round here. Dunno about elsewhere.

Same here, I will keep POTS. First I signed up for DSL with Pacific Bell (which was our Missy Bell). Then it became SBC. Then it became AT&T.

I can already see the effect of all those elefant marriages. Competition WRT, for example, phone rates to Europe seems to be on the decline. Ours actually went up :-(

As far as the aliens are concerned, well, I knew that wasn't Supernews's fault--but can the regulars _please_ just killfile them? Feeding trolls is stupid. "Never wrestle a pig. You both get dirty, but the pig enjoys it."

To be honest, I don't even know how to set a killfile in Mozilla. Even when selecting ignore on a "bar fight thread" it's still there.

Yeah, in Mozillas you have to use message filters. The good news is that when you're reading a message, there's a "Create Filter from Message" option in the Message menu. I usually just set the filter action to "Mark as read" instead of deleting the message--it causes fewer threading problems. Filtering is a bit quicker when you create the filters manually, from the Tools menu. You can do that server-by-server or group-by-group. For SED and ABSE, I have filters called "Idiots" (action: mark read), "Obscene idiots" (action: delete) and "Anatomy" (action:ignore thread). Cuts down on the noise level a lot.

I haven't been able to delete. It either hangs or a message comes up that states something like "Cannot delete message because it isn't your own". Yet all I want to do is delete that thread from my PC.

You can also filter by subject and sender, so e.g. Jim can ignore everyone posting from Google or Hotmail.

One thing I miss from Netscape is being able to ignore a whole thread by pressing ctl-K in a message window.

Yep, Netscape was better in that respect. But too many crashes here.
