I can see it now... A burglar in the UK breaks into someone's home
and is shot. When the police arrive on the scene, the burglar is
ambulanced to the hospital and when the police find the homeowner in
illegal possession of a firearm he is arrested and hauled off to
jail.

That is what would happen.

Later, because the gun was a .357 magnum or something on the
"prohibited" list, he goes to trial and is put in jail for a
mandatory 5 years,

It may be more. Handguns like that are specifically prohibited.

while the burglar gets off with 2 or 3.

The burglar's unlikely to get as much as that if he used no force !

Sounds like a _great_ system to me...

Householders may legally use 'reasonable force' in dealing with an intruder. That means
commensurate with the level of threat.

Yup, _GREAT_ system. My life is in danger and I take action which I
consider to be appropriate and some clowns, months downstream, get
to decide what the appropriate level of force is that I should have
used to protect myself and my family. You poor bastards must be on
the tit from the cradle to the grave.

Arizona rule: Alright to shoot intruder... just make sure body falls
_inside_ your house ;-)
