These are the most recent figures available.

11,624 / 50 = 232.5

In the UK the chance of being murdered by gun is **less than one in a million**
in any year.

The murder rate in the US is about 3.4 times what is is in the UK.

But consider the advantages of my being here, instead of living in the
UK:

I make a lot more money than I likely would there

Most everything, including food, is better and cheaper

The weather is better, especially air quality and pollen count

The women are better looking

The physical situation is so much better: I can drive to the beach, or
to a redwood forest, or to a waterfall on a mountain, in a half hour
or less, or to a world-class ski area in a bit over three.

I have the facilities and freedom to design and sell kick-ass
electronics. Starting my company took less effort than waxing my car.

I'm less likely to be assaulted, mugged, or burglarized.

I can ignore CE, ROHS, and a heap of business regulation and labor
laws. I don't deal with unions and can hire or fire as I please.

Mouser, Digikey, Arrow, or Avnet will ship me parts overnight if I can
call in an order by 3 PM. If I need samples from any of the big semi
suppliers, they'll be on my desk in the morning before I can finish my
latte.

I figure that advantage ratio for each of these item runs in the 5:1
sort of area. In exchange, by living here, the probability of my being
murdered increases from about 20 in a million up to about 60, although
with my personal demographics it's actually far less.

I'll take the tradeoff.
