Works fine for me in old Netscape, all the way to the latest available Mozilla and Seamonkey. All the pork swords are gone, except when a bored regular feeds the trolls (you know who you are). No misspelled colours, no chimps, nobody with diapers on their heads, either. *There is hope.*

One fine point is that if you want the filter to apply to a single group, you have to make sure to select the right one. You can also filter all groups on a server.

Another approach is to use individual filters. For instance, here I'm using Seamonkey, and looking at a post from the poor motherless child (*sob*). Because I'm too soft hearted to bear it, I go up to the Message menu, and select "Create filter from message". Up comes the dialogue box. I leave the search term default, because the term "Niemadre", while sad, is specific without leaving obvious loopholes. To avoid messing up the message threading, I choose the action "Mark As Read" instead of "Delete Message".

If I wanted to include his other multiple personalities, I'd add them to the top of the dialogue, carefully selecting the "Match any of the following" radio button.

Now my private world will no longer be disturbed by this poor fellow's piteous cries for help. Talk about alienation.
