All attempts to regulate drug use through making it illegal have failed miserably.
So, then, what's your suggestion for an alternative?
I've concluded that the only workable option is decriminalisation of drug use and open
no-strings access to treatment for addiction.
Fully disagree. Ok, here are some hard and sad facts, personally seen: I
have lived in the Netherlands for over six years where drugs are almost
openly available. Right after moving there our landlady got the visit
from police that nobody ever wants. They had found her only son floating
upside down in a canal in Amsterdam. Dead, overdose. Next, I met a guy
who walked around in a space suit, like a zombie. People told me he'd
also OD'ed and it fried his brains, totally. They got him back from a
full cardiac arrest. Sort of. Then there was a guy who could not talk
anymore. He just kind of stared through you. All in a village of barely
5000 people. Should I go on?

Thanks for the information from the Netherlands. I had no idea.
Were the drug users frequently violent, though? While it is sad that
they destroyed their own lives, with the drugs freely available, they
did not necessarily have to resort to crime to feed their
cravings...? And, the overdose victims are fortunate that health care
is, apparently, readily available there.
Personally, I have no opinion on drug legalization. I am always open
to ideas which may be superior to the status quo...
I have never met one who was violent but heard from a lot of people who
have (personally) been robbed at knifepoint in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
They said the robbers looked seriously ill, almost like in a daze. I
guess those were probably addicts who got a bit deperate because they
didn't have enough money for their next fix.
Other than that the addicts where I lived occasionally vandalized stuff,
like turning a stop sign into a pretzel, just like people who are
totally drunk.
I've had the unpleaseant experience of having to give CPR to a OD'd
guy, in a rather pleasant local park, underneath a spreading chestnut
tree, when I used to live in the UK,
I seem to remember getting very angry about it, here, I was drunk.
Thinking back over those years, I now feel somewhat angry about all
the people who passed by, without offering assistance to the guys
friend, who was screaming for help
