it sounds like you want NAS, (Network attached storage)
A case with a nice big fan (hard drives like it windy) a bunch of disks
with (probably) software raid-6 or just mirroring and a low maintenance
operating system running the fileserver.
If it's not simple mirroring I prefer software raid to hardware raid,
because whereas if it's proprietry hardware raid controller and fails
you've got extra work to recover your data.
