They are truly shockingly bad. Crazy since a 1/4" jack would happily fit
in almost every case.


Bugger!. For development work had standardised on 3.5mm stereo jacks. With
50ohm coax they're good to 500MHz and a damn sight easier to wire, cheaper
and smaller than BNCs. So cheap they can be thrown away after use. And what
better way of getting +V 0V -V into a steel can?.

Interesting.

The biggest problem with 3.5mm jacks I find is that the connention is
unreliable. Twist the connector or move the lead and the signal will usually
crackle.
