Personally, I'd make lying a capital offence.

No you wouldn't. That's a lie.

I'm not saying I haven't lied, just that a life without lies would be
better.

And if I'd have to sacrifice my head for it - I would.

I lie to those who are in positions of authority, whom I can't
challenge legally, who feel they can lie to me. I have never lied to
my wife or friends. Never ever. Never lied to my father - and
wouldn't.

Lying is a sign of disrespect in my opinion - I assume that is
universal opinion but from the amount that goes on - they must find
ways to rationalize it.

My wife married me for my honesty. She isn't likely to ask me if I
think she looks fat and I'm not likely to have an affair I don't tell
her about. That has kept me honest - I just wouldn't lie to her so I
wouldn't have an affair (and except for the novelty, she's a hard act
to follow).

Honesty will work; it can work. Humans have some flaws that make it
unlikely (not necessarily "flaws" just some survival traits that were
more suited for a different world than the one they created. Humans
can change their world a lot faster than they can adapt to the
changes)
