All you have to do now is explain why Americans swept the 2006 Nobels
in the sciences, and why places like MIT and Berkeley and Princeton
and UCLA are packed with the best students and researchers from around
the world, and why US technology companies dominate so radically.

1) because the 2006 Nobels are awarded for groundbreaking work done in
the 1980s.
2) they are packed with the best students and researchers from around
the world because the best American students are underrepresented
among the world's best. 50% of US science and technology PhDs go to
foreign students these days. That's not an argument for the US
educational system. And even more alarmingly, for the first time,
large numbers of them are going back home rather than staying in the
US.
3) "US technology companies dominate so radically" what? how many
times we've dropped the ball going from universtiy labs to applied
technology. when was the last time the US dominated in ceramics
technology? solar cell technology? imaging? where is GE doing their
medical imaging research? where is the large hadron collider being
built? which country detected methane in Mars' atmosphere? Europe's
been pumping out more scientific papers than the US for a decade now.
Physical Review did a study a few years back; 20 years ago, american
authors authored 60% of the papers, now it's half of that.

outsourcing is not just about cheap labor.
2. U.S. performance in math, science, and engineering is not improving
and other countries are surpassing the United States.
3. Preference for the United States as a business destination for
highly talented and highly educated foreign scientists and engineers
is waning."

Why do so many people think that Washington really matters, and think
the headlines in the Washington Post and the NYT are actually
important?

Because they affect reality?

And who the hell is 'z' ?

Well, if you don't know, then I guess it can't be important. Stay in
that bubble, and whatever you do, don't pay attention to Washington,
the WP, and the NYT.
