Probably information theory followed by robust control, then digital
signal processing.

Information theory...is that classed as electronics?
What components do I use?
Are there inforesistors and infotransistors? :P

Now it's not easy to make a DSP chip in a garage but I think all the
bulk of the thinking is in the software/firmware.
Question is...can software be considered electronics too?
