But none of the three of you offered any statistics to back the theory
up.
That's because you can't. In many countries you have only McDonalds and
Burger King in most cities for fast food so you could arrive at
statistics. In the US, however, you have a smattering of chains and
small local places where it's next to impossible to tally that up. Plus
many people lie about their diet just as they do about booze. "Oh, once
or twice a month, at the most ...". Then you see them pull up at night
and haul in those bags. And again two days later. And again on the weekend.
It seems that a total should still be possible. As they say, if you
can't measure the output, measure the input. The wholesale purchases
of fatty food stuffs should give a good estimate of the retail
numbers.
I don't think the majority of the meat transactions can be dragged into the public domain. You'd have to get at the financials for that and I don't think some of the major companies will let you.
Another problem here is the enormous consumption of soda pop. Not just
Coke but all kinds of other sugary drinks. I have been in many other
parts of the world and never seen it as striking as in the US. In fact,
in most other countries parents won't let their young kids drink that.
Mine didn't let us, and I am glad they didn't.
[...]
The theory that europeans etc are healthier because they can't afford
junk food has been I believe well rebutted now.
Of course they can afford it but they eat less of it. Families there
will also curb that out of financial concern. I have never seen a 99c
double whopper burger in Germany and I've lived there a long time. This
stuff was quite expensive compared to the US. You can easily be out 30
Euros if you have kids. And then they still want ice cream.
So is that a yes the theory is rebutted or are you saying only partly.
Partly, and only WRT "afford". Never thought such theory was brought up here. I have been in some areas where people definitely cannot afford to go to places like Burger King much. The southern tip of mainland Italy, for example, or the northern coast of Portugal. High unemployment, hard to make a living. Probably areas in Greece as well but I haven't been there, only heard from others.
No, you go look up the numbers and see if you can prove the claim you
and others are making. The links I posted, I believe show that the
claim is likely false.
Which one?
The combination of the three. The first showed that other nations had
a higher intake of fat and higher cancer rates than the US. The last
one showed a smaller that there was a smaller relationship between
diet and cancer than had been expected.
I guess now we're all getting confused here. The topic was life expectancy and how efficient health systems deal with sickness such as cancer, not cancer because of food (food rarely causes cancer). My initial point was that of the cancer that occurs, for whatever reason, the chances of you being healed from it is greatest in the US and rather dismal in some other countries where people perceive their health systems as better.
