Although people certainly don't enjoy the added "security" of airplanes,
unfortunately busses and trains in the U.S. are just too slow. Not because of
the necessary distance traveled and the speeds allowed, but rather because of
the number and duration of the stops they make. The Europeans seem to do much
better in this area, at least with trains.

The very effective French answer to very high speed train operation was to lay
entirely new purpose-built lines. Normal operation daily takes these trains to 200
mph and of course it holds the record for a railed vehicle of 357 mph.

You simply can't have mixed operation with speeds that high.

Whatever happened to this btw ?
