Yes, by only using the CLI. I have a completely icon-free desktop; whenever
I want to start a program I just pop open a console with a single keystroke
and type in the command and argument (actually, just the first few letters
of them and then TAB, which autocompletes the word.

Yes, except it doesn't work. When I key in Word or MS-Word nothing happens. Zilch. When I key Word into the DOS box then my DOS-Word copy dutifully shows up. And it does so in milliseconds, something "modern" SW is no longer able to do. So yeah, if I need to do something really fast, like looking up whether I have enough of a certain component in lab stock, I often use DOS.



Ok, but I'd like to see on the desktop what's available. Hard to memorize
umpteen programs and files on there.
Why isn't there an option to just display the text under the piccies but no

I don't see the point though. I find the icons quite useful.


I don't. In the same way that dashboards and cockpits should contain plain text. When I have the hand brake pulled in my car it says "BRAKE", not some cryptic icon.
