The Saudis. Why? Because the fundie Islamists conducted a raid in
Mecca that scared the pants off of the house of Saud. French
commandos bailed them out of that one, but in fear of increased
French influence in Saudi Arabia, we convinced them not to listen to
France and to try appeasement instead. Also because bin Laden may
have been involved and he was probably already our boy by then.

Osama was trained by the US to fight "the good fight" against the
soviet "invasion", and when the soviets ceased to bother, we dropped
