So she also ignored the oil light ?
Graham

Yep. She also apparently ignored the valve clatter just before it
blew. I don't recall her mentioning any smoke.

What I found amazing is that she refused to let any of the full
service gas station attendants look under the hood as she assumed they
were all crooks and would intentionally "find something wrong". This
was still in the days when the station attendants would still offer to
check your oil. Besides, her new car was suppose to only be serviced
by the dealer, at least until the warranty expired.

There was some kind of legal battle between her and the dealer. I
wasn't involved and barely recall the details. We had split up by
then. I do recall that the vehicle had gone to the dealer for a 500
mile checkup. However, whether the oil and filter were changed at
this time was a point of contention. I don't know, but I suspect it
wasn't. There was a settlement and she got a new engine, but had to
pay for most of the labor. As soon as it was running properly, she
sold the car and bought a used VW camper/van. 15 years later, it's
still running, so I guess she learned her lesson.
