The BIOS shouldn't matter unless you want to boot from it or use it under
DOS. Windows has its own device driver for floppy drives.
If modern versions of Windows don't support the 1.2MB format, try a Linux
live-CD. Linux' FDD driver will happily read anything which the controller
supports (i.e. not Amiga or Mac GCR disks), provided that you know the
parameters. The common DOS formats should be autodetected, but you can
enable other formats with setfdprm.
Got to stay with Windows XP on this one. But I don't need to boot from the 5-1/4 drive :-)
AFAICT, the biggest issue is likely to be whether the hardware is capable
of driving a 5.25" drive.
Per chip data*** it is.
