mining motherboard for parts

I had a motherboard that died and I started to mine it for smt parts(mainly
resistors and caps). They are aweful small but come off easy. But I'm not
sure if I'm ruining the parts. When I heat up one side and put some force
on it to either lift tilt it or completely rip it from its pads usually one
side looses any solder it had. I can measure the resistance and capacitance
and they seem to be ok but not sure how well they will work. Sometimes
though one sticks ot the iron and burns pretty quick and I smell something
funny(not quite sure what the smell is).

So what do you guys think?

Jon
