John

Clever :-)
Keep button pressed for half on?

Probably more than half on.

Yup. Now, how does one get back to full on/off?

John

Change the circuit into a phase-shift oscillator with a couple more
RCs and release the switch when you are happy with the `brightness`.

Not necessary. Just tap the switch a few times, and the gate voltage
increasingly seesaws at each tap. In effect, it's already a
phase-shift oscillator.

So it's a single-button controlled push-push switch and dimmer.

SPDT could be even neater.

John

Hold button down until gate and drain voltage at equal.

Release button.

Ignore cooking for the moment ;-)

How do you get out of this state?

...Jim Thompson

I just told you: tap the button a few times.

John

Nonsense, you're at equilibrium.

...Jim Thompson

Well, you're arguing with reality, and reality usually wins.

John

Any self-heating involved?

Best regards,
Spehro Pefhany

I suspect either that or charge injection from the finger through the
switch === reality ?:-)
