Up here in Santa Barbara, they have controlled burns during safe
periods. However, they aren't as aggressive as they should be. The
whole front range is a looming disaster since most of the brush is 40+
years old.
So. Cal fires are usually caused by whacko people, stupid people,
catalytic converters, and power lines. Don't think we need to go into
esoteric causes to explain the obvious.
We had a wonderful day yesterday, wind was strong enough to pick up
ash from our 150,000 acre (60700 hectares) burn area (burned a couple
months ago), blow it 20 miles, and rain ash over the city. What a
mess. The air was orange, visibility was less than a mile or two, and
my mouth was gritty since I was playing outside.

Hey, at least half the front range burned back in the 90's! I was there!!!!

Do you mean 70s? The last big front range fire was the Painted Cave
fire which took out a narrow swath down Old San Marcos road in 1990.
That's the one where it took out 250 homes and nearly the same number
of apartment units. I was awe-struck seeing the size of the flames
roaring down the mountain, fanned by 60+ mph winds. Since 1980, the
front range has been pretty quiet except the Paint fire.
