Last time I checked, San Diego was pretty far South.

THE South is as explicit a location designator as THE Bay Area.

San Diego is not in THE South.

We need a better designation for that socially backward, economically
disadvantaged region of the USA than just a direction on a compass.

Some people feel that parts of Florida are also not part of "The
South"
