Re: Audio Amplifier Question

I also made a mistake earlier, 4Vp-p is not 2.82Vrms, its 1.41Vrms, this is
what I have been told line levels can peak too.

In which case you need to start ignoring whoever told you that. Unless perhaps
your source was talking about a CD player output level in which case they're
close.

Professional style line level can reach well over 10V rms.

Your pre-amp as I assume it is, operating from +/-12V will be able to deliver a
signal of up to ~ 6V rms if it has gain. However it is normal for the maximum
output level of preamp stages to be greater than the power amp's input voltage
spec.

BUT a 1 watt signal into 8 ohms is 2.82V rms. If the chip has a gain of 20dB
then this makes the TDA8552 input sensitivity 2.82V/10 = 282 mV.

To be honest though your design doesn't seem well thought out. It is essential
in design to work out these factors well in advance. You should already have
calculated these signal levels yourself.
