Have you tried cleanning the wheels inside?
First thing I did. I keep my mice nice and clean. A bit of fluff fell out and
that was it.
Where' there's a little fluff, there's usually more scattered around
the inside of the mouse.
MS buries the screws under the serial number label. Bash a hole in
the label to get to the screws. Use a #1 Phillips to unscrew the
mouse. Clean out any crud that may have accumulated.
There's also a tendency for the grease on the ends of the shaft
encoder wheels to collect dust, dirt, cat hair, and food. Given
sufficient crud, the wheel will eventually jam. Clean and do NOT
re-grease the ends. You don't need that grease.
If it's not the wheel, it's probably the optical encoder emitter or
detector are out of alignment. They are cantilevered off the circuit
board and tend to bend over from inertia when the mouse is dropped.
Bend the emitter and/or detector so they are roughly aligned, and try
again.
MS also has some mechanical mice that use an optical encoder with a
vertical slot between the emitter and detector. Dust and crud get
into the slot and cause problems. Clean with air or use a pin to
scrape out the crud from the slots.
Some mice also are sensitive to the position of the ball retainer
ring. Make sure the arrows are aligned with the case.
Otherwise, there are a variety projects that can be built inside a
mouse housing. Examples on request. Save it for the day you need to
prototype something that requires a DE9P serial connector.
