There is always the risk in computing that using the bleeding edge new
stuff is sexy and in a poorly managed environment (and sad to say many
software shops are badly managed) they tend to adjust things to justify
getting in the newest latest and greatest toys. Inevitably the salesman,
on commission sells them the most expensive stuff he can get away
with...
I have to laugh about the bad software shops. I was part of an I.T. unit
of six, we all had our own niches, mine was databases and security, we
had an apps developer, a project manager and a web designer as well as a
systems guy which I did part of the time.
Anyhow it was great having project management because we were getting
hammered by requests for new software, new this, new that.
And when the new administration came in, guess what they scrapped first.
Yup, project management. Everything went to hell after that.
