There's one thing you clearly do NOT understand. It is impossible to
specialize very much in large systems work, too many goddammed
technologies involved, too much sheer volume, and usually cutting edge
application of everything. On my last job, it's not an exaggeration for
me to claim wading through *at least* 50,000 pages of documentation of
every imaginable sort and scope, most of the technical stuff written for
the specialist, totally disorganized, no beginning and no end, no
background, no tutorials, no mentoring, no assistance of any kind,
everything requiring serious study, memorization, background reading,
re-reading again, going back to something else, reviewing, just went on
forever, every last bit of everything in a rapid state of flux, no
constants, major revisions all the time, gigabytes of new disc
documentation coming in monthly. It took me a full year to come up to
speed on the whole sheebang, with a detailed working knowledge of a only
a very few aspects, and very limited authorization to intervene in the work.
